japan pm offers condolences for wwii d

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay) of Japan is offering condolences for the Americans who died in World War II as he makes a historic address on Capitol Hill.

Abe tells a joint meeting of Congress that he visited the World War II memorial on the National Mall and reflected upon the 400,000 American troops who died with "deep repentance in my heart."

Abe says that's what's done cannot be undone. But he says that on behalf of Japan, "I offer with profound respect my eternal condolences" for those deaths.

Abe is the first Japanese prime minister to address a joint meeting of Congress. His speech comes as both countries mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
